    PART A:
    Annotated bibliography.  Worth 10% of the unit mark (2 marks for each reference used). Use the following format and complete one sheet (template below) for each reference.  You must use at least three different types of references, e.g. academic journal articles, books, reports, newspaper articles (through the UWA library site), government websites. If using a book or report, it is acceptable to select one or two chapters. You do not need to evaluate or make notes about the entire document.

     

    ANNOTATIONS AND EVALUATIONS OF FIVE (5) RESOURCES FOR REPORT

    The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to help you learn about a topic, provide an overview and to critically assess your sources. It will help you make a judgment about the suitability of your references for your assignment. You will also need to question the author/s credibility and opinions.
     

    Notes on evaluating resources:

    Currency (date):

    • Check the publication date, the dates of the references, and if published on the www, the date it was last updated
    • Is it current? Or doesn’t that matter for your purpose (e.g. just giving some background)?

     

    Relevance to your essay:

    • Does the resource cover your topic in sufficient depth? Or will it be useful for just part of the essay?

     

    Reliability and Accuracy:

    • Check the details of the author’s qualifications or the organization where s/he works
    • Check the details of the publisher
    • Check to see if it is peer reviewed or refereed
    • Check the organization and you may need to find literature from other sources for a different point of view
    • Are any facts or statistics given?Check the source. 
    • Is it from an academic journal, newspaper, the Internet? If it is from the internet, is it a reliable source such as a government web site?
    • Check the domain in the URL if using information from the www.  This will tell you if the information is published by an educational, government, or other organisation.  Sometimes, companies want to sell their products by advertising on the www in the form of ‘academic’ information.
     
     
    Reference details:
    Include all bibliographical details and write as an end reference list. Also include how you would write an in-text reference.

    Report 20% 1,000 words.
     
    Task: Choose a topic related to ‘Business Ethics’. It could be about fraud and corruption in business, business and the environment, the internet and fraud / identity theft, ethics in marketing (e.g. deceptive advertising), fair trading, etc. You may use a case study or company where ethics has been a problem, or even a criminal offence. One example of an ethical problem recently was the fire in a Bangladesh clothing factory where more than1,000 died due to working in an unsafe environment while producing cheap clothes for wealthy Western companies.
     
    Research and write a 1,000 word report using the following format. Do a word count on completion, from the beginning of the executive summary, to the end of the conclusion.
     
    Remember that a report is factual. All information provided must be objective. In-text references must be used when quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing or synthesizing information.

    An academic report, like an essay, requires careful and considerable research.
    Like an essay, a report gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of a subject and your ability to construct a clear and logical argument.  However, reports and essays are different.  While the most obvious differences between the two formats relate to their layout, there is also the difference of purpose.
